Jessica Hatler, sole proprietor of Ironic, has succeeded in fulfilling a lifelong ambition. A notable accomplishment for this petite twenty-six year old business woman. Born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee, Jessica attended UT and graduated with a degree in marketing. The baby boomers are aging and living longer. There are at least 70,000 people age 65 plus in Knox County. A recent study shows that 230 people out of every 1,000 in this age group will need non-medical assistance. The majority of families or individuals today has someone or knows someone who can benefit from in-home nonmedical assistance. Knoxville now has a brand new facility that can provide just such services.
While teenagers dream about getting their driver's license and the "freedom" of the open road, most parents have nightmares about their teens getting their driver's license. Many of us have sat white knuckled and wild eyed over in the passenger seat as we try to patiently go through the process of teaching a teen to learn how to drive. Yet, this type of stress is nothing compared to how it feels when you watch your teens drive away alone. Did you teach them everything they should know? Was every possible scenario given to them? Are they prepared?
In last month's column we discussed F.E.A.R., or False Evidence Appearing Real. False or not, fear is a powerful emotion that can dictate behavior and control one's actions. Worse than the lost opportunities themselves is the knowledge or feelings of failure that are often experienced when surrendering our dreams or ambitions to F.E.A.R. Successful entrepreneurs are not immune to F.E.A.R. Experience, however, has taught them how to deal with F.E.A.R and how to overcome or at least minimize it.
I consider myself a lucky woman; I have a wonderful relationship with my mom, Susan V. Morris. She's an inspiration, source of strength, and a friend. She's a mother, a loving wife, a business owner, and a talented artist. I'm amazed at how much she has done in her life. She's touched a lot of people. Every day I look forward to talking with her. She is a big part of my life.
No doubt most of us have given thought to becoming self-employed at one time or another. Many disillusioned employees embraced country music legend Johnny Paycheck’s 1977 release of “Take This Job and Shove It” as sort of a national anthem for work-weary Americans, but it’s doubtful that it resulted in many new business start-ups.
