kimmelton.jpgKim Melton has been interested in cosmetics all her life. Now, as the founder and owner of Diva K Minerals and DKM Skin Care line, she gets to do what she's passionate about with an added bonus: She only sells cosmetics that include the purest ingredients. You won't find any talc, aluminum, bismuth oxychloride, or any other questionable chemicals in anything you buy from her.

"I have been into makeup and skin care since I was a little girl," Melton said. "And my daughter Paige has followed in my footsteps."

Located in Knoxville, Diva K Minerals is a local business that is going national. It has grown slowly but surely, thanks to the quality products it offers. Some of the mineral makeups offered include foundations, concealers, veils, blushes, eyeshadows, bronzers, lipsticks and lip glosses. DKM Skin Care offers new products all the time.

"Before I started this, I used to work for three home shopping networks," Melton said. "I sold an Italian skin care line and was trained by a master aesthetician. My mother taught me at an early age to take care of my skin."

One of the new products offered by DKM Skin Care is a hyaluronic acid serum, which is a hydrator that enhances collagen to fight wrinkles and helps regulate any skin type, whether it is dry or oily. Another quality product is a new anti-wrinkle serum with 24-carat gold in it. Melton sells wholesale to many spas and salons that carry the whole line.

"Being with women of different age groups, I talk to them about being preventative instead of repairing damage," Melton said. "I enjoy selling, and I enjoy selling the very best to my customers."

You could say that Casey Peer's new business, Weight Tailors, is a dream come true. She came up with the concept, she says, in the middle of the night.

"It came to me that I needed to combine metabolic testing and weight management," Casey says. "Then it took about a year to develop the idea of Weight Tailors."

Casey has a master's degree in clinical nutrition. She used metabolic testing in her first job after college, so she knew how valuable that information could be in the development of a weight loss plan.

"The more muscle mass you have, the higher your metabolism is. We can actually measure how many pounds of muscle you have," she says.

Casey uses the test, as well as other tests and in-depth client interviews, to develop a customized plan for each client. She doesn't refer to her plans as "diets," which tend to be temporary. The goal of Weight Tailors, she says, is to help clients achieve their ideal weight by making sustainable changes.

Casey is also a certified personal trainer with over twelve years of experience, so she always incorporates fitness into her clients' customized plans.

Weight Tailors offers a variety of programs with varying levels of accountability. Group sessions, including Girls Night Out and Weight Tailors Together, which is specifically for couples or close friends, are also available.

In addition to growing her business, Casey is busy raising a daughter, who is seven, and a son, who is eight. She feels fortunate that her family has "rallied her on" with the new endeavor.

Her favorite part of her job, Casey says, is watching her clients achieve success.

"The best part is seeing people succeed at something they've tried so hard to do," she says. "People are so appreciative when they're able to meet their goals."

kim.jpgKim Rose, owner of Assist 2 Sell in the Renaissance Farragut, discovered her career when she was working as a licensed auctioneer in Toledo, Ohio.  To auction real estate, she had to become a licensed real estate agent.  After three short years, she went on to obtain her broker's license and decided it was time to own her own real estate business.

Kim opened her first real estate franchise, Assist 2 Sell, in Toledo.  She says about her choice of company, "I wanted to offer a savings to the consumer without lacking on services.  After researching many different business models, I discovered Assist 2 Sell was by far the best value for today's consumer.  We are able to do everything traditional offices do, but for less."

When her family, which includes her husband, a 13-year-old daughter and a 12-year-old son, decided to move south to a warmer location, they chose Knoxville.  Arriving here last summer, she earned the required licenses and opened a new office for Assist 2 Sell in March of this year.

Kim enjoys owning her own business, saying, "I'm just a real go-getter.  I like the flexibility of making decisions without going through a lot of red tape."  She also has experience in a downturn real estate market so can pass her knowledge on to others.  She explains, "Knoxville is still a great market.  There is a lot of real estate activity happening on a daily basis.  There is more inventory on the market than years past with longer days on the market, but properties are still moving."

Kim believes the most important thing she brings to this business is experience.  She says, "It is imperative to keep up with market trends, technology and consumer needs as we move through today's challenging market."

Susan & FrancesFor Susan Worthington and her mother Frances Sexton, owning their own business is not just a job - it's a family affair.

Worthington and Sexton own Southern Market, a collection of shops within a shop. Each merchant stocks his or her own corner of the store and is in charge of maintaining and displaying the merchandise. Southern Market provides a venue for merchants to sell their wares without having to build their own store or hire a staff. The result is a unique collection of furniture, decorative items, clothing, gifts and other treasures offered in a multitude of styles.

Worthington has a master's degree in accounting and Sexton, a past president of the Junior League of Knoxville, has degrees in computer science and psychology.

Worthington and Sexton founded Southern Market 12 years ago after visiting some upscale antique markets in Atlanta. They decided that Knoxville could use something similar with a modern twist, and after 20,000 miles of traveling to find merchants from all over the Southeast, Southern Market was born. Worthington handles all the leasing and marketing for Southern Market, while Sexton is in charge of the management of the store.

"We call ourselves function and form," Worthington said. "Frances handles the functional details and I handle the form and image. We enjoy the team approach to management."

But Worthington and Sexton are not the only members of their family that contribute to Southern Market. Worthington's 10-year-old daughter Callie sells a collection of items she selects from a catalog, her husband Mark oversees the accounting, her mother-in-law Jeanie Worthington works in the store, her father-in-law Gene Worthington helps with legal matters, and her sister Anne and brother-in-law Walter Henegar contribute from Atlanta. Her father, Charlie Sexton, formerly assisted with financial advising.

"We're all involved," Worthington explained.

Southern Market's only current Knoxville location is at 5400 Homberg Drive, but Worthington and Sexton plan to open another location in Farragut next year. The new Southern Market will be three times the size of the Bearden store. It will feature an expanded interior design selection and a furniture gallery.
