Last week a friend and I went to a new restaurant in the Old City called The Crown and Goose, a good, old-style British tavern. We felt the electricity in the air; people always enjoy seeking out a new eatery, especially if it's good.

From the moment you walk in you get that English feel, from the tiffany lights, old English ceiling, deep tan rich tones and, of course, Pink Floyd playing in the background. The bar has a good feel as it wraps around the back of the restaurant where to my surprise it merged into a very comfortable red leather lounge area. If that's not enough, straight through the back of the Crown and Goose is a 2,500 square foot outdoor beer garden with trees and picnic tables.

We started our dinner with Boddington Beer and Guinness Stout dipped onion wedges; both were great. The great selection of beer was cold and the onion wedges were crisp and not greasy. For the main course I ordered the fish and chips and my companion ordered the Sheppard's Pie. Again, the fish was not greasy but it was fresh and crispy, and to my surprise the Sheppard's Pie was topped with two perfectly cooked lamb chops. All in all, if you're in the Old City, go on in and give Crown and Goose a visit.

White or Red Wine

Francis Ford Coppola is not only a famous Hollywood movie director but he also is a fantastic wine connoisseur and vineyard owner. This month we are tasting the Diamond Collection 2006 Claret. The Claret is mostly a Cabernet Sauvignon in the stBruchettayle of a French Bordeaux, which means the cab is blended with Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot; all from California showing us the diversity of grapes in this region. The Claret has a deep red color and expresses flavors of chocolate and sweet spices. It is very smooth and lively with blackberry, currant and wild strawberries. This wine is what I call "no food required," which means it's just perfect on its own. Turkey Creek Wine and Spirits sells this wine for $19.99.

Recipe of the Month

Yes, summer is almost here and it is time to take advantage of the nice ripe Roma tomatoes that are available in the area. Bruschetta is a form of an Italian salad with olive oil, diced vine-ripened tomatoes, fresh garlic, onions and fresh picked basil placed on slightly toasted country bread.

  • Wash 2.5 pounds of Roma tomatoes, cut the ends off, half and seed. Chop the tomatoes in ½ inch squares and leave at room temperature.
  • Chop 4 ounces of red onions at about ¼ inch thick and set aside.
  • Pick and chop fresh basil and cut into ¼ inch pieces and set aside.
  • In a large bowl, mix the Roma tomatoes, diced onion, 1.5 ounces of fresh chopped garlic, ½ table spoon of salt, 1.5 ounces of pure olive oil, ½ teaspoon of pepper, and 1 ½ ounces of fresh basil. Mix well and set aside at room temperature.
  • Slice your bread at about ¼ inch and toast slightly. Place some fresh bruschetta on the pieces of bread, garnish with whole leaf basil, serve and enjoy. This makes a great summer Antipasti.

The gossip is that Greg White will be taking over the Choto Marina Grill. I think he will also open Nama in the old Cha Cha's in the Homberg area. The rumors are true that I am taking over the Andrew Morton building in Sequoyah Hills and opening The Black Coach Tavern, a 1930's style bar/tavern and Prime Steakhouse.

Again, thank you for all your support and your emails.
