"It's great to be a Tennessee Vol... It's great to be a Tennessee Vol..." The competitive numbers definitely speak volumes. UT achieved its highest ranking ever in the 2007 U.S. Sports Academy Directors' Cup, which awards points based on 20 sports (10 women's and 10 men's). In winning five SEC titles and the NCAA women's basketball championship, Tennessee finished No. 7 in the nation and that was better than any SEC school. It is a tribute to the efforts of many people, including women's athletic director Joan Cronan and men's athletic director Mike Hamilton. "I was a math major in college, but I am people person now," Cronan said. "It takes a lot of people to get the job done. We have tremendous athletic programs at the University of Tennessee that every person in the community should be proud of."
"It is a great time to be a Tennessee Vol," Hamilton said. "Our student athletes continue to succeed in their respective sports as well as in the classroom. Tennessee fans should be proud of the accomplishments happening day in and day out on campus." There are about 500 student-athletes on scholarship at UT and 75 earned their degree in 2007. There were 227 with a 3.0 or higher GPA. In terms of overall success, UT had 19 sports teams qualify for NCAA Championships. 2006-2007 Season SEC Coach of the Year honors went to Pat Summitt (women's basketball), Jim Kelson (men's golf) and Ralph and Karen Weekly (softball). Coach Summitt has won eight NCAA titles, including back-to-back titles. Four UT student-athletes received SEC Player of the Year awards: Chris Lofton and Candace Parker in basketball and Monica Abbott (pitcher) and India Chiles (player) in softball. 2007-2008 Season
The UT men's basketball team won its first outright SEC title for the first time in 41 years, was ranked No. 1 in the country for the first time in school history and advanced to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament.
